The more I read about the history of wool the more there seems to be to celebrate. Britain has more indigenous sheep breeds than any other country; incredible fortunes and even wars have been won and lost due to wool. 

Politicians in the House of Lords have a constant reminder of the importance of wool whilst the Speaker sits on their Woolsack, but for most of the country the mention of a fleece sadly turns minds to those horrid micro plastic polluting garments with the style of a throw away wrapper.

The driving force of the industrial revolution was our textile industry, enabling Britain to build a vast empire. We are now in the midst of another revolution where every aspect of our lives is again being questioned. Having a deep understanding of the wool industry is surprisingly relevant when considering pivotal world changes. Much discussion now is about learning how we can live in a sustainable non polluting way, one thing I know for sure is that wool will be part of the answer. 

From October 5th to 18th the Campaign for Wool is celebrating wool in all its glory, highlighting the importance of wool in everything from luxurious carpets, furnishings and clothing.

Previous events have included the now legendary turfing of Savile Row. Flocks of elegant Bowmont sheep grazed whilst finely tailored wool suits flocked together on the backs of pristine gentlemen. Sadly such events are not on the cards this year but live streamed talks will hopefully keep you informed and amused from the comfort of your own home.

On the 4th October, the Campaign for Wool will be launching their Dashing video. They filmed this with us whilst sheep sheering with John Taylor, please do check out the Campaign for Wool YouTube channel on the 4th October.

On the 15th October, we were hoping to hold an event in store, but with the new restrictions in place, this is now not possible, so instead, we will be launching a range of interviews. We will be talking about our collaboration with John Taylor and his flock of Swaledale x Bluefaced Leicester sheep. Learning about the quality and processing of wool is a fascinating subject and it’s often forgotten just how valued cloth and clothing used to be. We will also be joined by the spinners, weavers, and our in-house creatives as well as Peter Ackroyd from the Campaign for Wool.
