THE ART OF DRESSING

Whilst wandering around the colourful Frieze sculptures in Regents Park I was contemplating the boundaries of art and utility. Some of the larger pieces you could shelter under yet their primary function was to highlight the fragility and instability of form whilst presenting the viewer with ever changing colours as they interact with the environment. They are expressly art not architecture, their role is to encourage questions and discussion as to the meaning of life and any use they have is incidental. Devouring pure art is a necessary indulgence for ones well being but it need not be at odds with everyday life.

For me clothing should exist in a constant dialogue with art and I find it disheartening that pure function has been such an overriding aspect of attire recently. Hipsters and many others have thrown themselves headfirst into utilitarian work clothing, discarding the soulful satisfaction of the decorative for pure mundane practicality. This puritanical approach is not only detrimental to the emotional welfare of the wearer but also such as unnecessary penitence; in these harder times it’s the last thing we need.
