As technology continues to stride forward our world is becoming increasingly simplified and homogenised in the name of progress. Globalisation dilutes creativity as shops around the world merge to offer the same goods and trending reports ensure a uniformity of style.

Dashing Tweeds likes nothing more than bucking these trends, we revel in designing fabric in new colours and textures, dancing to our own tune rather than those of others.

This season we do not disappoint, we have designed and woven eight new original fabrics for a complete winter wardrobe.

For sumptuous coats we have a delightfully weighty 24oz tweed woven using Kilcarra Donegal yarns. These feature subtle neps of colour, enhancing the rich design. We were inspired by a coat worn by the famous actress Gertrude Lawrence in a cross basket weave structure and have designed three colour ways in a fresh green, orangey red and chocolatey brown. These timeless designs are set to become heirloom pieces that can be handed down through the generations. We have named the brown design Maddox, the fresh green one Basil and finally the crimson version Gertie.

Over the years we have been honoured to teach weave students at the prestigious Central Saint Martins art school. We set a project to inspire the students and award a prize for the most interesting design at the conclusion of the course. We chose Yumo as the winner this year and have put his design into production.

Woven in the Scottish borders using an interesting combination of woollen yarns the textural design features layered earth tones offset by an electric blue check. This sumptuous tweed with a lovely depth of colour will look fabulous in both town and country especially when paired with flannel trousers or even jeans. Using Yumo’s design we simplified the weft threads to create a stripe in blues and brown, this we have named Leighton and have used to tailor a sample shooting suit for the London shop.

Shetland wools always prove popular in the winter seasons so we have worked with them again to create an interesting check in a pleasing combination of sky blue, rust and sage colours. The fresh looking design has a classic quality feel yet looks modern and original. It tailors beautifully and makes up into an ideal knock about tweed suit; my favourite kind for everyday easy wear.

Finally we have woven a couple of Merino worsted fabrics for evening and smart wear. These both feature a small motif reminiscent of a Greek key. From afar the cloths look like shimmering blocks of colour, come closeup and the exquisite weave detail is revealed. At 11oz the weight is ideal for all types of tailoring, it’s heavy enough to drape well and will last years yet light enough for comfortable wear.
