Seven years ago today in Bangladesh, a Dhaka garment factory collapsed in Rana Plaza killing 1134 sweat shop workers. This catastrophe could have been avoided, the rest of the building had been evacuated as large cracks had started to appear in the building but the poor garment workers were told to work on.
 It’s easy to blame the bosses who were convicted but the hasher reality is we are all to blame. Westerners and particularly the British, who are a driving force in fast fashion have become addicted to unsustainably cheap clothing.

Fashion Revolution is helping to highlight the realities of the whole supply chain involved in the fashion industry.

Many years ago fabric was so highly regarded that linens were kept locked in chests and a marriage proposal could be dashed if beautiful cloths were not included in a dowry.

People have come to value fabrics less and less over the years, although obviously you as Dashing fans are more knowledgeable than most.

As you know we produce all our fabric in small well run mills around Great Britain and use as much locally produced British wool as possible. However, you can help to spread awareness of where your clothes come from with others.

If you see clothing that is too cheap to be true, then you know the true cost is people lives. Buying from British brands that really manufacture in the country is a great place to start. Yes, these clothes may cost more initially but that is recouped easily with the longevity of wear.

Simply, better quality clothing lasts longer.

Not only are enslaved workers suffering from our cult of fast fashion but so it the British fashion and textile industry. As a country we are well known worldwide as a producer of fabulous clothing which is lapped up by sophisticated countries such as Japan. We really need to buy more British made goods else the future of our mills are in great danger.

The good thing is that whilst we are locked down we are considering what’s really important to us. It’s a chance to wear beautiful old clothes that are perhaps a little to tatty to go out in but are so well made, in beautiful fabric that you still cherish wearing them.
